About Me:
Hi! I’m a geomagnetism scientist from Edinburgh who loves space science, working out and baking delicious goodies for my soon-to-be husband.

After a day full of scientific research and coding (sitting at my desk most of the time), I love to get my body moving! My favourite ways to stay active are hiking, weight lifting at the gym and also pole dancing, which usually surprises people.

My Work:
I work mainly with Earth’s geomagnetic field and space weather.

As part of the Geomagnetism Team, I am involved in various projects including:
- Daily data processing and analysis – data quality control, cooperation with several geomagnetic observatories around the world, monitoring daily data processing
- Interpolated In-field Referencing (IIFR) – providing geomagnetic field values for directional well-bore surveying, monitoring the quality of data provided in real-time
- Space weather – daily space weather forecast, monitoring the delivery of several space weather related products
- World Data Centre (WDC) – updating global observatories database with the most up to date magnetic measurements
-
My Typical Day:
I start my day with a quick workout and head straight to work (1hr+ on the bus). Each day looks slightly different. Sometimes I have meetings all day, discussing everything space weather, and sometimes I sit at my desk doing research or coding in Python. I usually finish at around 5pm and end the day cuddling on the sofa, watching Netflix.

As already mentioned in the section above, my work days involve data analysis, some code developing (although I’m still far from being a coding expert!) and space weather forecast and research. Space weather describes how the state of the Sun can affect us on Earth and astronauts in space. That’s why it’s so important to get the predictions right!

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would probably use that money on commuting to different cities (or countries!) to share my passion about space weather.
-
Education:
Before university, I was still in Poland so as you can imagine my secondary school was in Poland. My main subjects back then were physics, maths, geography and English.
I then moved to Wales to study Planetary Physics at Aberystwyth University.
After my undergrad I decided to further pursue geosciences with a Masters by Research degree at the University of Edinburgh.
-
Qualifications:
I have Polish Matura Exams in advanced maths, physics and English.
Bachelors of Science in Physics with Planetary and Space Physics.
Masters by Research in Geosciences.
-
Work History:
I got my first “real” job when I was studying at Aberystwyth University. I was working as a cleaner/housekeeper back then just to earn some extra money and gain valuable work ethic.
At uni I was also working as a student ambassador, representing my department during Open Days and leading visitors on campus tours.
After moving to Edinburgh I had to take a half a year break before starting my masters , so I decided to work as a cleaner again.
Finally, during my postgraduate days I managed to get my current job as a geomagnetism scientist at BGS.

Current Job:
