I definitely remember being in school wanting to be a scientist. My feeling at that time was that I wanted to do a PhD in physics and I wanted to spend my life researching something really important.
So I did loads of work, and I got quite stressed by it (the classic ‘if I don’t do perfectly in everything then my life is a total disaster!’ even though that’s definitely not true).
Now I’m doing my PhD in particle physics & I do really enjoy it! It’s good fun, the people I work with are great & I enjoy what I work on. But with perspective, I definitely think I had a ‘grass is greener on the other side’ view of things when I was working my way here. There are certainly downsides to being an academic that I didn’t understand when I was at school.
What I’m trying to say is try not to let pursuing the goal of achieving your dream detract from the life you’re currently living!
