About Me:
Hi, my name is Josh and I’m a PhD student at the university of Oxford. When I’m not working on my research I enjoy playing lacrosse, watching sports on TV and going on nature walks.

Even though I only play cricket and lacrosse now, I used to swim competitively, play tennis, american football and golf. I believe that sports should be everyone and that science and sport can mix, despite any stereotypes that exist.
Now I’m in the second year of my PhD and have got settled into Oxford I am looking into doing more outreach. I hope to explain to young people what scientists do to inspire interest in studying science and increase people’s understanding of how modern technology is researched.

My Work:
I am a Physicist that makes layers of material over 1000 times thinner than a human hair. I then test these materials to look for new and interesting magnetic properties.

These materials need to be thin as the effects that we are looking for are on very small scales. To find these effects we use lots of different methods using strong magnetic fields, x-rays, extremely powerful microscopes and electrical measurements. These materials have the potential to be used in sensors and computer processers that use less power than what we have now. This is an important thing to focus on as we try to limit the affects of climate change.

My Typical Day:
I spend a lot of time doing experiments, typically around 9-6. I split my time between 2 different places, one in Oxford and one 30 minutes away. In the evening I’ll go down the gym or go to training.

While my normal day I eat breakfast and get into the lab around 9am and leave around 6pm, sometimes I have to leave at lunch for a big lacrosse match before coming back in the evening to catch up. My supervisor lets me set my own hours as long as the work gets done which I’m very grateful for. Also a couple of times a year we have a big experiment which we have to travel to Spain, France or Germany to do. It’s quite fun to see different place and travel but we have to work very hard to get everything done while we are there.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would like to help fund workshops and events that help get more women interested in Physics. Physics, engineering and maths are very male dominated which should not be the case and we need to put effort into making young women interested and feel welcome in these areas of science.

What did you want to be after you left school?
I always knew I wanted to study science at university.
Were you ever in trouble at school?
Of course! I was always very chatty so got in trouble for talking in class.
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
I would be working as a physio or sports coach (probably swimming or cricket)
Who is your favourite singer or band?
I don't really have a favourite artist at the moment.
