I’ve lived in Devon my whole life and I love it because I get to walk on Dartmoor and swim in the sea. I love playing netball even though sometimes it gets cold in the winter months! I play in goal defence (GD) which means I have to try and stop the other team from scoring 🏐 I also watch football – my favourite teams are Liverpool and Plymouth Arygle! ⚽️ I love listening to Taylor Swift, my favourite songs are ‘shake if off’ and ‘anti-hero’ 🎤

My Work:
I’m a planetary geologist – that means I study space rocks! I study the rocks on Mars to see if they are good places to land robots and maybe even humans one day! I’m also part of NASA’s Curiosity rover mission to Mars!

I use images of Mars to study the rocks on the surface. These rocks are billions of years old and tell us about what Mars was like billions of years ago! There are 3 types of rocks: igneous (volcanoes), sedimentary (oceans/lakes), and metamorphic (rocks that have been changed). The sedimentary rocks on Mars tell us about a time when there was water on Mars! This is so exciting because in places where we find water, we often find life! These old rivers and lakes on Mars are perfect places to send Mars rovers to see if they can search for evidence of life on Mars.

My Typical Day:
I start work at 7:30 – checking emails and studying pictures of Mars. At 4pm I start my other work with NASA’s Curiosity rover because it is 8am in California! I usually finish my day anywhere between 4pm-10pm, then I sit in bed watching Netflix or reading a good book before a good nights sleep.

I start work in my home office at 7:30 with a cup of tea and some toast and check my emails. I work for 2 hours before going to the gym and taking a bubble bath 🛁 I look at images of Mars until lunch time, and maybe take my dog Bella for a walk. After lunch I continue with my research until 4pm when I different type of work starts. At 4pm I start work on NASA’s Curiosity rover mission because it is 8am in California and sometimes I have meetings later in the evening so I can talk to people in the USA. I usually finish my day in bed watching Netflix or reading a good book.

What I'd do with the prize money:
If I won ✨£500✨ I would create a programme to get more kids excited about Mars! Space science is super duper exciting, especially right now with so many missions exploring the solar system. Mars is our planetary neighbour, and is the place for humans to explore in the future… could you be a future astronaut?!
-
Education:
Okehampton College – GCSEs and A-Levels. These qualifications helped me choose what university I would go to, and what I would study.
Lancaster University – BSc (Hons) Earth and Environmental Science. This is where I fell in love with space and I wrote about volcanoes on Mars for my final project.
University College London (UCL) – MSc Planetary Science. I learned so much about space, I absolutely loved it and knew I had to keep learning.
